Central City Eastlake Park
Eastlake Park began around 1890 as a pleasure ground at the end of the Phoenix streetcar line and became a city park in 1914. For decades the surrounding neighbourhood was one of the only places Black families were permitted to live in Phoenix, and the park was the one place they could gather safely.
Booker T. Washington spoke here in 1911. The city's Juneteenth celebration has been held here since 1921. Through the 1940s and after, Eastlake was the site of civil rights rallies and the starting point of the marches to the state Capitol, and it now holds the Phoenix Civil Rights Memorial.
Ahead of the 2024 NCAA Men's Final Four in Glendale, the tournament's legacy project refurbished the park's indoor and outdoor basketball courts. OpenStreetMap places the outdoor court twenty metres from the pin. Play after sunset from May to September; the Phoenix summer does not allow much else.
