Binghampton Lester Community Center
Before he was an All-Star, Penny Hardaway was a kid from Binghampton shooting on rusted goals outside Lester, looking for a way out of one of Memphis's hardest neighbourhoods. The courts here are where that story begins.
He came back. In 2011 his childhood friend Desmond Merriweather, then coaching at Lester Middle and ill with cancer, asked Penny to take over the team. Hardaway coached Lester to three state middle-school championships before the group moved on to East High together.
