Tom Lee Park

422 Riverside Dr, Memphis, TN 38103
Lit Pickup games Sport tile Metal backboard

The riverfront court under the Tyre Nichols Sunset Canopy, its surface painted from a work by Memphis-born artist James Little. Penny Hardaway unveiled it himself.

Tom Lee Park reopened on the Mississippi riverfront in September 2023 after a rebuild by Studio Gang and SCAPE, and the basketball court is the centrepiece. It sits under the Sunset Canopy, an open-air pavilion named for Tyre Nichols, the young Memphian who died after a police beating earlier that year.

The playing surface is a multi-colour painting based on a work by James Little, the abstract painter who was born and raised in Memphis. Penny Hardaway unveiled the court. Very few public courts in America carry that much meaning in a single slab of paint.

The park posts 3,791 Google reviews at a 4.6 average. Come at sunset, when the canopy earns its name and the river turns gold behind the far basket.

The court at Orange Mound Park sits in the middle of that history. It is a straightforward neighbourhood court with a local run, and the neighbourhood's pride in itself is visible on it.
